2009 Race Recaps
Kyle Cox Schedule and Results

BROKEN DISTRIBUTOR ENDS KYLE’S NIGHT EARLY

Kyle Cox Mobile 6-20-09: The US Army Rookie of the Year leader came in to Saturday night with fresh changes to his Carquest Sportsman. Off the trailer, Kyle was faster than he had been all year and in the heat race he motored his way to a hard fought 3rd place finish. With a solid run in the heat race Kyle would start the feature in 5th. With the dro of the green flag Kyle’s progress to the front was going the wrong way as veteran competitors used up the first year competitor. With 5 laps to go the distributor gear on the motor broke and ended the night early.

Kyle: “ Our car is a lot a better and I feel like the heat race was our best race of the season. I got beat up pretty good in the feature from the beginning. I wish we hadn’t broke I felt like we could have gotten some of those spots back.”

SHORT NIGHT FOR KYLE WITH BLOWN CLUTCH

Kyle Cox Mobile 6-6-09: The Bob’s Speed Shop Bombers were the featured class on Saturday night with qualifying and an extended feature the only on track activity for one of the hardest working classes at MIS. Kyle came into the evening as the leading US Army Rookie of the Year Candidate and 5th in points. On the way out of the pits to qualify the clutch on Kyle’s Carquest machine started slipping. By the time qualifying was over the clutch was done. Kyle tried to nurse a lap out of it in the feature but there was nothing left to get and the Carquest team took a big hit in the point’s standings dropping all the way down to 10th.

Kyle; “Double points night is a bad night to have the clutch go out on us. After getting beat up last week in the feature I wish we were going back to the track this week to get this monkey off my back.”

KYLE SHINES WITH 6TH PLACE FINISH 5TH IN POINTS

Kyle Cox: After a busy autograph session in this years meet the driver night Kyle got busy on the racetrack. A 4th place finish in the heat race set Kyle up for a 3rd place start in an 18-car Mothers Day field in the Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman Division. The US Army Rookie of the Year candidate found himself in the deep end of the pool in only his 5th start at Mobile International Speedway. From the drop of the green flag Kyle was mixing it up with the veterans and holding his own. Spending most of the 15-lap feature 2 and 3 wide Kyle kept up the pace giving up only 3 spots to bring his Carquest machine home 6th. Another solid finish moved Kyle up to 5th in the championship point’s standings.

Kyle: “It was crazy, cars were inside, outside and sometimes both at the same time. I feel like I learned more tonight than in all the races so far. Having our Carquest Monte Carlo up in the front with the guys who are winning every week was a great opportunity. They taught me a lot about how to get around. We’ll keep working so we can race those guys harder next time.”

KYLE SOLID WITH ANOTHER TOP 10

Kyle Cox 4-23-09: Big fields have been a common theme in the Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman Division at MIS this season and by the luck of the draw Kyle has had to start at the back of all of them. This past weekend another unlucky draw put the US Army rookie of the Year candidate at the back of the heat race. A green flag race gave Kyle little time to gain many positions and he would have to start at the back end of the feature. Dodging wrecks and passing cars have become a way of life for Kyle and his Carquest Sportsman. From shotgun on the field to the top 10 Kyle was solid in his 4th outing at Mobile International Speedway. Another solid performance has Kyle up to 8th in Championship point’s standings.

Kyle: “Every week I learn something new. This week I learned when Mr. Tommy says they’re wrecking, get your hand up, back it down, back it down, he means it. It will be easier to get in my seat next time because I have a lot less butt from the butt chewing I was getting until I got it right. I got it right just in time to miss a car sideways in the track. Every week I get a little more comfortable and I learn more and we keep getting faster.”

KYLE KEEPS MOVING FORWARD IN SECOND OUTING

Kyle Cox 3-28-09: After a solid opening night performance Kyle Cox was looking to move his CARQUEST machine closer to the front of the pack. With a 100 lap event as the headliner The Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman Division ran an extended 20 lap feature with the field lining up by a random draw. Kyle started at the tail end of the 18-car field and started working his way to the front. On lap 5 Kyle took his first shortcut across the grass to dodge a huge wreck that blocked the racetrack. After that close call Kyle kept gaining speed and passing cars. The last lap of the night was the fastest he’s turned this season finishing 12th, 2 spots better than the week before.
Kyle: “I really had fun tonight. The first night I was nervous and just didn’t want to make a mistake. After I took my CARQUEST ride for a ride across the grass and came out OK it gave me some confidence. I still have a long way to go, I wish we were racing next week but we’re off 2 weeks.”

KYLE TURNS IN SOLID PERFORMANCE

MIS DEBUT

Coming off two seasons at the ¼ mile Sunny South Raceway, the high banks of Mobile International Speedway looked more like Daytona to Kyle Cox and the 20 car field was triple the numbers of cars he was used to racing with. While everything was bigger for the Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman rookie Kyle did what few rookies do on their opening night, bring his CARQUEST machine home in one piece. A solid heat race had Kyle starting 11th in a huge field of cars. An improper gear selection by Kyle’s crew chief (same guy who was spotting for Thomas) left Kyle underpowered for the feature. With a car that was not up to speed Kyle kept digging and with each lap improved his lap times with the last lap of the race his fastest lap of the night. Kyle: “Once I got use to all the cars it was a lot of fun. Every lap I made I learned something. I’m looking forward to going back on Saturday night.” Kyle and his CARQUEST machine will be back in action Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway.

March 19,2009

Raleigh North Carolina based CARQUEST Auto Parts, the premier supplier of replacement products, accessories, supplies and equipment for the automotive industry has become the primary sponsor for Kyle Cox’s Max Force Racing entry in 2009. Kyle joins team CARQUEST after cutting his racing teeth at Sunny South Raceway in the Stinger Division and will make his first start at Mobile International Speedway on Saturday night. The 15-year old honor role student is scheduled to compete in every race night at MIS this season while attempting to capture the US Army Rookie of the Year honors. Kyle will give his CARQUEST machine a final shake down tonight in preparation for Saturday night’s season opener at MIS.

Kyle: “This is a big opportunity for me. It means a lot to have Mr. Tommy put his trust in me to drive one of his cars. To have CARQUEST as our primary sponsor is pretty incredible. I’m 15 and to be sponsored by the same company that sponsors Mark Martin is more than I could dream of. I’ve got a lot to learn and I’m looking forward to getting started.”
